Our children still enjoy home cooked meals, family game nights, and devotional time together. There is one main difference between your family and our Children’s Village family; our house parents are taking care of eight children plus their own. Imagine cooking with two ovens because one is too small or using industrial size pots because you have to cook enough food for ten or more people. They do laundry with two washers and dryers because the amount of laundry a week would be overwhelming with only one washer and dryer. Christian City is thankful that we have loving and dedicated house parents that make an impact in our kids’ lives.

If you would like to learn more about The Children’s Village at Christian City, please visit our website at www.christiancity.org. Our partner schools also understand the importance of a strong education, and the social skills required for our children to succeed throughout their lives.

Success has many faces and often can be measured not only by academic achievement but also an increase in self-esteem, mental, and physical health. Success for Ben at The Lighthouse School encompasses all these attributes and is portrayed in many areas of his life. Ben came to Christian City over 7 years ago and has made huge strides in his education, leadership skills, and self-esteem.

He started The Lighthouse Program as a “typical” new student anxious about a new environment, new friends, and new social opportunities. In less than a year, Ben transformed from a shy 10th grader to a leader to all his peers and teachers. He was given the responsibility and title of Safety Monitor by his teacher. He took ownership of this responsibility recognizing that students are encouraged to try their hand at office work, maintenance, and construction. The position of Safety Monitor evolved into supervising maintenance for all the school. Ben is the “go-to” guy for all safety and maintenance and is the first point of contact for al outside vendors. He shines while taking on his leadership roles, and everyone here at the Children’s Village is blessed to witness God’s work in him!

If you would like to learn more about The Children’s Village, Christian City, or how to sponsor a child, please visit our website at www.christiancity.org.

Real Homes, Real Love

Everyone needs a place where they can know without a doubt that they are accepted and loved. A place where there are healthy boundaries borne out of a concern for their welfare, a place where they are cared for and where adults step up and lift the burdens and worries of life off their young shoulders and let them just be kids again. They need a place where the love of Jesus Christ is manifested and made real in every word and touch. That’s the kind of place we strive to be.

For some, coming to us is the revival of a time when life seemed filled with hope. A time before their world had turned into an existence colored only in dingy hues, where the bright cheery light of day seemed to be fading away. Blue skies and bright sunshine had vanished. Others arrive in survival mode, coping with overwhelming challenges of neglect, abuse, and abandonment. They harden their exterior, and project a tough unaffectedness but inside a gnawing emptiness and fear steadily grows. They don’t have the answers for questions they don’t even yet know how to articulate. They stagger under the weight of emotional pain and brokenness that they long to be free of.

This is where The Children’s Village has the opportunity to minister the love of Christ to these children. We can help remove their burden of fear and hurt because we care for them, compelled by our Lord who is in the business of being a tender Father to the hurting, rejected, downtrodden. We support them, encourage them, guide them, and provide their needs. We show them they can trust in adults who will be there for them, who are committed to their success, protection, and their good. We simply treat them like our own. And, in keeping with our motivation, we help them understand that God loves them even more than we, and that His redeeming love can transform and make beautiful things every life.

Everyone Needs Love

Everyone needs love…and everyone needs a good place, a safe place, and a loving place to call home. He then explained the ambitious plans for campus improvements as well as new services to become available over the next several months. ChristianCity sits on almost 500 acres just south of AtlantaHartsfieldAirport in Union City, and is home to over 1,000 seniors, as well as being a residential program for less fortunate children.

Some Campus Renovations will take place soon, while more expansive infrastructure changes will be possible as the economy improves. There has already been an increase in clinical staffing, new operational policies and procedures, and new technologies. Additional services becoming available in the next couple of months include: home health services, point of sale pharmacy, hospice care, SOURCE, expanded physical/speech/occupational therapy, and renovations of portions of the skilled nursing and assisted living facilities. The major infrastructure plans include: new assisted living and memory support facilities, internal roadways, additional life leasing housing, life and activity center, senior community center, health club and pool, a new ministry to developmentally disabled adults, phase two of The Children’s Village, and much more.

A major part of Mr. Crutchfield’s presentation was devoted to extraordinary efforts being made to ensure and strengthen ChristianCity’s commitment to quality care according to the principles of the Christian faith. “We are here to be loving people who love people in need in the name of Christ. That was our mission in the beginning and remains our mission and calling today”, Crutchfield said.

Crutchfield went on to say, “ChristianCity’s committed staff has been providing quality residential, health and social services, and opportunities for spiritual growth since 1965. Our 44 year reputation for excellent care for seniors comes from our passion to radiate the love of Christ. This results in extraordinary care, because it’s not our job—it’s our mission!”

For more information about ChristianCity and their services for seniors, the elderly and infirm as well as their residential programs for abandoned and abused children, please visit http://www.christiancity.org/, or call 770-703-2636

Photo Caption: President/CEO Bob Crutchfield addresses a packed Town Hall Meeting

Christian City Political Forum

Tomorrow, October 8, 2009 at 4 PM, Christian City will host a bi-partisan candidates’ forum for Christian City residents and citizens from the surrounding communities. Since there are substantial tax advantages in "planned giving," we reccomend that you consult with your financial advisor, accountant, or attorney who can advise you on the method most advantageous to you. If you do not have a qualified professional to assist you, let us know and we would be happy to recommend someone to you. Please consider leaving a legacy that will give hope for a better future to the at-risk children and seniors in need.

P.S. Swine flu is a respiratory disease and has some elements of a virus found in pigs. It spreads quickly since it is a new virus and we are not immune to it.

The best way to protect you from Swine Flu is to practice good hygiene. By not spreading germs and practicing good hygiene you are ultimately slowing down the spread of the virus. Make sure to always carry tissues to cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing then dispose of the tissue after use. Make sure to also sanitize your hands throughout the day with either soap and hot water or sanitizer gel. We’re all in it. It begins at birth and ends at death.” The best way to enjoy the process of getting older is to eliminate as many unexpected events as possible. It is important to educate yourself about what options are available to you as a senior in regards to housing, services and health care.

At Christian City, we look forward to working with individuals and families who are doing their homework and are getting educated about services for seniors. As we move from one stage of our life to another, we should be making plans and getting prepared for what may lie ahead. Few people make major decisions throughout their life without getting information to support those decisions first. Making major decisions about your future as a senior should not be any different.

In order to gain the peace of mind and education you need to be prepared for the events of your later years, you should consider beginning now with the information gathering process. Invest a few hours to explore the “what if’s” of the future in case you or a loved one has a major change in health or ability. Perhaps you are an adult child and want to gather information for your parents….your inquiries are always welcome at Christian City. We look forward to meeting with you and answering all questions big and small.

Located in Union City, Christian City is home to over 1,000 seniors. Christian City boasts a vibrant retirement community including life-lease patio homes, options for independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing and rehabilitative care, apartments for those on limited income and facilities for those who suffer from Alzheimer's disease. The opening of Phase I of The Children’s Village at Christian City will be announced in a few weeks’ time and occupancy of the first cottages will become a reality.

We have all heard the expression “Some things never change”. Well, that’s not exactly a concrete statement, although it’s a good statement regarding the work of the Christian City Home for Children, Inc. While we are making a change in our children’s homes location on our campus, and we have changed the name of the residential program from The Home for Children to The Children’s Village at Christian City, our quality program and our commitment to the 43 year ministry to children of need “..will never change!”
What began as a dream of caring folks out of the Southwest Christian Church, the Christian City Home for Children, Inc. celebrated the 43 years anniversary of the opening day of service on February 14, 2008.

The Children’s Village at Christian City is a continuation of the past 43 years of serving God’s children who are in need of a “home away from home” due to circumstances beyond their control. These new homes are replacing the original cottages built to care for children placed at Christian City. The need to change to a new type of home that is better suited for these children became paramount. Our homes are being built with state-of-the-art craftsmanship and will include a new floor plan, new furnishings and appliances. Utilities were all considered in planning to assure long term efficiency. These are not institutional settings, but rather a family dwelling with the look and feel of “home”.

Phase I of The Children’s Village is a secure location with limited access and includes the first four homes. One has a full basement to serve as a safety/storm shelter for all four homes should the need arise for a shelter. Each of the homes face the drive-around loop, which will eventually contain 8-10 homes. This initial phase includes two homes for boys and two homes for girls for a total of 32 children. These children are currently placed in our original homes on campus. We are not building new capacity, but rather a relocation of these children. Construction is nearing completion on the last home and we are awaiting a Certificate of Occupancy.

Phase I also includes the Home for Children, Inc. Administration building with an adjoining training room for house parents, foster parents, and the community at large.
This building is currently under construction and is targeted to be completed by August, 2008. The Administration building will serve as the Welcome Center for The Children’s Village, and will be the processing point for all visitors. The Administration Building will also house the social services caseworkers who handle child intake interviews and placement of children at Christian City.

During this initial move, two cottages that serve as relief cottages for our full time
House parents, will remain on the current Home for Children, Inc. campus. Phase II will include two new homes for those relief cottages, as well as two new homes which may be used for emergency/respite relief, and a child advocacy center of some type to be determined.

There is a significant need for assistance with the “move in” to Phase I at The Children’s Village when that date is announced. We will be moving four homes full of furnishings, new furniture, children’s personal belongings, kitchen supplies, as well as all the usual “stuff” that families accumulate through the years. If you, or your church group, civic club, business associates, family and friends would like to be put on the list to assist in this momentous day, please call Lauren Kosiba, Administrative Assistant to Philip Kouns at 770-703-2636. We can’t wait to welcome you to The Children’s Village at Christian City and thank all of you who have donated your time, services, and resources to help make The Children’s Village possible!

Atlanta Business Chronicle Ranks Christian City First!

Christian City Ranked First in Atlanta's Top 25 Retirement Communities and First in Top 10 Assisted Living

Christian City was ranked number one in Atlanta's Top 25 Retirement Communities and number one in the Top 10 Assisted Living Communities in a recent issue of the Atlanta Business Chronicle. With the humble motto of “Loving people…loving people” Christian City reaches out to young and old and those in-between by providing safe homes to abandoned and abused children, affordable housing to seniors on limited income, as well as providing professional care to those in need of assisted living, nursing and rehabilitation, Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Additionally, Christian City is a well respected community for active retirees. Seniors can live out their latter years in a secure neighborhood setting with opportunities to participate in fun activities, to make new friends, to attend worship, to do their banking, socializing, and to get involved helping others through volunteer work. Christian City is affectionately referred to as a “City within a City” because of all the conveniences it offers and the strong sense of community that the residents feel.

It all started around a kitchen table. Back in the early 1960’s Ms. Millard Price was looking for a way to provide a safe place for homeless children. She met with her Minister at Southwest Christian church, Jim Dyer, who agreed that this was a worthy endeavor and a calling from God. Others began to get involved and share the vision, especially members from numerous independent Christian Churches throughout Georgia and beyond. Ms. Price offered to bear the cost of the first cottage, and Dr. and Mrs. Byron Harper, Jr., central participants in the visionary team, offered to donate the first 50 acres. The dream was becoming a reality, and the mission was clear: To minister to the needs of families with particular emphasis on children, the aged, and the infirm, by providing residential, health and social services in accordance with the principles of the Christian Faith.

The first of eight cottages opened on Valentine’s Day in 1965 with eight little boys. Full time houseparents provide a nurturing family environment complete with sit down dinners, household responsibilities and traditions that create a sense of belonging. The funds to provide this care are raised through individuals, civic and professional groups, corporate sponsors, and the faith community, along with some support from the Department of Family and Children’s Services. Over the past 43 years, Christian City has been “home” to over 1,000 abandoned, abused, and neglected children. Licensed for up to 64 children, Christian City also provides foster care placement with well qualified Christian families.

A few years following completion of the Home for Children, construction began on hundreds of patio homes for active seniors followed by nearly 300 apartments for seniors on limited incomes.

As the needs of the residents continued to grow, so did Christian City! It was a natural progression to begin construction of an assisted living facility, a skilled nursing facility and rehabilitation center, and eventually a full continuum of care for the aging all on one campus.

At Christian City, the “future is now” and the needs of many are at our doorstep. A brand new state-of-the-art Children’s Village will be completed this summer. When the original children’s cottages are vacated, they will be renovated to make room for a new ministry for developmentally disabled “adult” children.

Over the past 43 years, Christian City’s campus has grown from 50 acres down a quiet country road, to 500 acres bustling with life and filled with hope for over 1,000 residents. The dreamers keep dreaming… and God keeps providing.

Christian City is a nonprofit, nondenominational organization. On this “second time round”, retirees are not seeking financial benefit and career advancement. Many, having secured a measure of financial freedom, now seek to invest their time in activities that bring lasting meaning and purpose. They realize that finding a passion for making a difference “makes all the difference” in both their emotional and physical well being.

Ms. Jill Growney, a 21 year resident of Christian City, embodies this growing trend among seniors. “While I was working as a teacher, my life was busy with the responsibilities of my job – classroom, conferences, lesson plans. I did not have much of a concept for my retirement years other than some traveling – but that is no longer the case,” she stated. Ms. Growney notes that her life has certainly changed for the good since having the time and opportunity to invest in the lives of others; “I had always been a people person, yet after the death of my husband I found myself alone. In spending my time investing in the needs of others, I have found new ways.. meaningful ways, to enjoy my life."

Indeed Ms. Growney has! In addition to the recreational activities she enjoys, her desire to serve others has brought her into (among others) a meaningful role as a volunteer chaplain to the Christian City community. For over ten years, her love of ministry has been evident as she has led a weekly bible study for those who suffer from Alzheimer's disease. She warms the room with her bright smile and residents look forward to hearing her uplifting message each week. She expressed, “My service as a volunteer has definitely changed me – I find so much enjoyment and purpose in helping others. My life now has a new sense of worth. ”I recently started square dance lessons – I say to myself....“I can’t believe I am doing this!”

Located on a beautiful 500 acre campus in Union City, Christian City is home to over 1,000 senior residents and is always in need of enthusiastic volunteers like Ms. Growney. In addition to being an active retirement community, Christian City offers housing for those on limited income, assisted living, nursing and rehabilitation, convalescent care and care for those who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. Less fortunate children also live on campus at The Children's Village. His legacy? Christian City.

Last Saturday, Dr. Byron Harper, Jr. passed away. There was a funeral on Wednesday and then he was buried in simple grave in a small cemetery. He ended his personal presence as humbly as he lived…quiet, unassuming, loving, positive, an encourager of all that is good and decent. His voice is now silent, but his legacy is not.

Dr. Byron Harper, along with his wife Rose Marie, was the driving force behind the creation of Christian City over 47 years ago. It was around his kitchen table that Christian City was prayed for, birthed and nurtured. It was on Dr. Harper’s land that Christian City became a reality. It was with Dr. Harper and Rose Marie’s direction, encouragement and support that Christian grew from one cottage for homeless children in 1963 to a sparkling new Children’s Village; from 50 acres of scrub pineland to a 500-acre campus housing over 1,000 children and seniors today.

Doc Harper loved people. He helped provide affordable housing for thousands of seniors many of whom had little or no income. He encouraged the building and operation of a 200-bed nursing and rehabilitation center, an assisted living and personal care facility, and an Alzheimer’s Disease center on Christian City’s campus. He provided free medical care for children without families of their own, the aged and infirm. He cared for hundreds of employees of Christian City, went from floor to floor to see and minister to residents, worked tirelessly in the clinic, and still maintained his private medical practice to thousands of patients from around the city.

Dr. Byron Harper is with us no more. He will be missed, but his legacy lives on in the thousands of families that have been touched by his servant heart. Dr. Harper was a great man.

Bob Crutchfield,
President/CEO,
Christian City

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://christiancity.blogspot.com/2008/04/dr-byron-harper-dies-his-legacy.html' title='Dr. Byron Harper dies. Depression affects nearly 3-5% of the population at any one given time, and there is a 20% chance of having an episode of clinical depression at some point in one’s life. However, it can be successfully treated more than 80% of the time with medication, counseling and/or life style changes.

Symptoms of clinical depression include:

• A sad mood most of the day, nearly every day
• Significant weight loss and/or weight gain or decrease/increase in appetite
• Trouble sleeping (either too much or too little)
• Feelings of restlessness
• Fatigue or loss of energy
• Problems with concentration or decision making
• Recurring thoughts of death or thoughts of suicide

Christian City is the perfect place for those prone to feeling let down after the holidays. They offer a professional, loving staff who monitor for signs of depression and make sure residents get the attention they need. Keeping seniors engaged is an important factor in maintaining good mental health. Morning exercise classes, three nutritious meals taken with friends, water aerobics in the heated pool, an ice cream shoppe, library, and numerous planned social occasions keep residents active and happy. Seniors can make new friends and be a part of a vibrant community.

Located on a beautifully wooded campus in Union City, Christian City has a long history of offering excellent retirement opportunities, assisted living, nursing and Alzheimer’s disease care. Call our admissions department today for more information or to set up a free tour at 770-703-2600. You can access our website at www.christiancity.org. In the new year, come to Christian City….your place for life!

LOCAL CIVITAN CLUBS SUPPORT CHRISTIAN CITY'S NEW INITIATIVE FOR COGNITIVELY CHALLENGED (DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED)

Fayette County Civitans, the Line Creek Civitans and the Civitan Foundation have enthusiastically gotten behind Christian City's new developing initiative to serve cognitively challenged adults by providing residential care in a community environment on their campus.

Cottages previously used by the Home For Children will become available for use when the children are relocated to a new Children's Village under construction, due to open in spring 2008.

Local Civitan Clubs, long known for their commitment to the developmentally disabled, are leading the way in terms of support for the new project by donating $8,000 collectively toward retrofitting and furnishing the existing cottages to ready them for the new tenants.

Christian City, located in Union City, is a nonprofit, nondenominational organization with a long history of ministering to those needing a safe place to call home including abandoned and neglected children, seniors on limited income, those who suffer from Alzheimer's Disease, retirees, those in need of assisted living and convalescent care. Fulton Chamber of Commerce.

Collected phones will be sent to recycle centers who will refurbish the phones and give Christian City between $3-$30 for each phone. Money raised through the cell phone drive will be used to support the ongoing ministries for abandoned and neglected children, as well as services for seniors, Alzheimer's patients, the elderly who live on their campus.

Located in Union City, Christian City has been serving the community since 1965 when they opened the first cottage for eight little boys who needed a safe, loving, place to live. Kouns was the founding Executive Director of Rainbow House, an emergency shelter for children in Clayton County, and served in that position for 18 years. He is widely recognized for his commitment to the needs of children in crisis and has received many awards and accolades, the most recent being the Lifetime Achievement Award from Georgia Association of Homes and Services for Children. With 26 years in the field of Child Welfare/Human Resources and as an ordained minister, it is clear he has a "passion for ministry."

In his new role, Mr. Koun's main responsibilities will include the development of our children’s programs beginning with the construction of our new 30 acre Children’s Village at Christian City. Additionally, he will form a program that will define the training and development needs for new foster parents. The intent of the program is to go into the community and recruit potential foster parents, train them on campus, develop a support system and a follow up system so when they receive children into their care they will be fully prepared and supported.

Mr. Kouns commented, "Leaving Rainbow House was a monumental decision for me and a painful decision, but not in respect to the excitement of the challenges here. I've known about Christian City my entire life, there is no other place I would have considered going."

Christian City's Home for Children, located in Union City, has been meeting the needs of abandoned and abused children for over 40 years. With the support of the community, they have provided a safe and loving home to over 1000 children in crisis. Mr. Koun's expertise and understanding of the needs of these children will help carry Christian City into the future and will help form the direction for the next 40 years to come.

For more information on Christian City, to make a donation, or to volunteer, please call 770-964-3301 or go on line www.christiancity.org

Volunteers at Christian City Treated Royally

Christian City recently thanked their volunteers with a royal event straight from the Renaissance. Jack Sias, President of the Georgia Renaissance Festival, asked his staff to help entertain the over 270 volunteers that lovingly donate their time and talent to the residents at Christian City. Lunch was served by an appreciative Christian City staff under a big white tent while performers impressed and engaged the audience. Among the performers were Bret Blackshear, who demonstrated Curious Magic, Kathleen Finger, an Irish harpist, and Court Poetess, Laurel Wordsworth.

A big part of the over 40 year success of Christian City is due to the tireless, dedicated volunteers who serve by working in Graceland Thrift Store, the ice cream parlor, the library or lending by lending a hand in the many campus activities such as the Country Fair and the Arts Alliance concerts. Help with fundraising efforts is always needed as the organization relies on donations and community support. Patty Johnson, volunteer coordinator commented "Working with the volunteers always gives me such joy. Christian City in Union City provides all this, thanks to a group of volunteers who, three years ago, formed “The Arts Alliance of Christian City”.

The goal of “The Arts Alliance” is to create opportunities for the Christian City community to regularly participate in culturally enriching events, primarily involving the visual and performing arts. And thanks to organizations like the United Community Bank: and people like its President and Chief Operating Officer, David Coxon, these events have become a regular addition to the lives of over 1,000 senior adults who live on the 500-acre Christian City campus.

On May 9th, through the support of The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s “Partners in Performance” program, the Arts Alliance presented Messrs. John Meisner and Christopher Pulgram, featured violinists of the ASO, in a virtuoso performance of a wide range of classical and contemporary music. Mr. Jomal Vailes, ASO Interim Manager of Community Engagements, coordinated the event with Christian City Arts Alliance Chairman Mary Ruth Kimsey, and Debs MacNellis, Christian City Arts Alliance Coordinator.

It is often difficult for some senior adults to attend such outstanding events. So, to see that everyone would have the opportunity to participate, members of the Arts Alliance volunteered their time to provide transportation in passenger vans and golf carts. They picked up residents from all over the campus, including the assisted living facility (Sparks Inn) and the Christian City Convalescent Center.

“We are so pleased to have these opportunities for people with limited access to quality cultural events. Christian City is most grateful to Mary Ruth Kimsey and the wonderful members of the Arts Alliance for their love and sacrificial efforts,” said Bob Crutchfield, President and Chief Executive Officer of Christian City. “They exemplify what “Loving People” is all about.”

Christian City’s motto is “Loving People…Loving People” This could not have been more evident as the Christian City Arts Alliance joined with the ASO and the United Community Bank in helping the senior community of Christian City enjoy a quality evening of performing arts.

For individual or group volunteer opportunities at Christian City contact Patty Johnson 770-703-2614; for performing and sponsorship opportunities contact Debs MacNellis 678-466-1093.
